Cirkus in Beweging
Cirkus in Beweging (CiB), the circus school of Leuven was established in 1994 by Rika Taeymans. Based on the Sherborne movement therapy she developed a circus pedagogy based on taking care of yourself and the other. Until today, the beating heart of our circus school is about giving and receiving confidence, to discover and develop your talents in a safe place. This is how we create a daring space, where we dare to be ourselves, to move, play, dream and perform. Where making mistakes is a must!
We keep (re)forming ourselves and circus based on the diversity of our participants. All together we are committed to sustainability caring for everything and everyone and contributing to a just future.
The school evolved from a small group of students to a school catering for average 1350 students in the weekly classes in all sorts of disciplines and with a very large and famous parkour section. Every year it engages another 1000 kids through vacation camps, school projects and workshops for a very wide variety of organizations. From its first days, CiB engaged with community centers and youth welfare organizations to offer children and youth in a challenging context to benefit from the same rights of learning and developing through circus. This work also expanded to inmates in prison, people with mental disabilities, children in psychiatry and to the integration of children with neurological challenges or mental disabilities into the regular weekly classes.
CiB is an active contributor to the circus education field in Flanders by providing the yearly BIC (Basic Training for Circus teachers). It is also an active international player in projects of training for trainers, youth development, circus in psychiatric settings and general holistic institutional transformation.
